Complement-coated pathogens can be __________.

a. destroyed by complement binding and punching holds in the cell membrane

b. lysed or opsonized as a result of complement binding, depending on the type of cell

c. opsonized which results in phagocytosis

d. destroyed by neutralization

Expert Answer

Complement - coat protect from infection . It engulfed pathogen by phagocytes . The complement system is a characteristic of instinctive immune system , which is compatible to the antibody response . It clearing out pathogens by phagocytic cells from an organism , and aslo serves as a indicator to indicate targets for phagocytic cells . In this system several protiens bind to a target cell. After the first complement proteins bind , the pathogen rapidly coated in complement proteins. Complement proteins can combine to form attack complexes . These structures can destroy pathogens by their leaking contents. Opsonization :- The whole process by which a pathogen is marked for ingestion and destruction by a phagocyte is called opsonization. Neutralization :- Antibodies coat pathogens and neutralize them by blocking key sites on the pathogen which increase their infectivity . Neutralization can prevent pathogens from entering and infecting an organism .

So, lysis or opsonization of pathogens can occur by the complement-coated system. Complement activation proceeds through opsonization of pathogens and their lysis by phagocytes. Complement system enhances opsonization by coating pathogens and leads to bind them for removal.

Therefore, Complement-coated pathogens can be lysed or opsonized as a result of complement binding, depending on the types of cell.
